Let's hope the next Grand Trial is a good one, though I admit the fact that Lycanroc will be the sole Pokémon to fight against Nanu and that he will go on a rampage again after we got an entire scene where his issues seemed resolved, after seemingly treating getting dirty as the actual trigger for the rage mode (and with the Celesteela episode feeling like a plot hole in this sense, given today's ep proves it's getting dirty in general, not just the mane), makes me think they had absolutely no clue of what they were planning here. I can't say I really like how common that is in this show now that we're 76 episodes in.

There's also the fact that while Bewear realizing something was up was funny, its arrival mid-battle and attempted interruption stopped the battle at an awkward point since the beginning and middle parts of it felt fun to watch, but way too rushed, and as I mentioned the ending makes the whole thing feel unearned, which by now seems like a theme in SM: characters are constantly rewarded for no real reason, and hard work is completely optional. I came out of the episode less feeling like Ash and Pikachu earned the victory out of their own strength, and more like they lucked out on a new move and Ash's personal Z-Crystal deciding to be usable again, and considering this is a proxy of the Ghost trial from the games (and I still dislike how the trials just feel very 'whatever goes' in the Anime rather than something actually structured, with Totem Pokémon seemingly serving no real purpose other than powered up wild Pokémon that sometimes appear), it feels like Ash didn't really earn his right to challenge Nanu here.Īlso, the scene with the class studying Mimikyu was rather pointless, and almost felt there to remind us they exist given the show doesn't feel that different even when they aren't around.
#When did pikachu learn electroweb how to
A smart show would've had Ash win by using Electroweb's new properties to outsmart Mimikyu and prove to be the best trainer over Team Rocket, instead not only is Electroweb's only usage to be a glorified shield for a Z-Move after only minimal foreshadowing earlier, but it's not even used further beyond the reveal in favor of Ash forming the Pikashunium-Z out of nowhere again, even if the move is still unexplained and Ash has done absolutely nothing to try to understand how it works, unlike how he worked out Blaze and tried to see how to use his bond with Greninja effectively, since SM has this terrible trend to introduce plot elements and then develop them on a whim rather than feeling like there is a plan.

My issue is that, after putting a challenge ahead of Ash, they had him overcome it with a twofold deus ex machina rather than actually letting him overcome him with his smarts and strategy, which is one of Ash's key defining traits, which made his win feel unearned. See, while I actually preferred Electro Ball, I'm neutral towards Electroweb as a move since, for the most part, it can be just as strategic as Electro Ball was even if it doesn't fit Ash's speedy battle style as much as a move that's actually powered up by speed. That said, I feel that the ending of the battle is really where the majority of the problems of this episode show themselves, especially so since it could've been solved rather easily. In all honesty, I feel this episode was quite a mess, with decent set up to a good battle, actually delivering some solid battling by SM standards, and then ruining that set up with some problems that could've been avoided easily if the show had only been smarter with the elements it had on hand.įor the good things, I did like that it was another overall battle-oriented episode, I appreciated the general characterization of everyone (though admittedly, I'm not the biggest fan of how Acerola does nothing but being Ash's pseudo-companion here, I hoped for Greedy Lapoo the Gengar to remain as a Pokémon of hers given how that episode ended), and for the most part the battle between Mimikyu and Pikachu felt nice to see, especially how Mimikyu made use of the Megamart's location and the various 'swordplay' clashes they had.
